How to handle a herniated disk? Should I rest or be active? I suffer instant chronic pain.?

Ive been in bed 3 weeks and they say i have a herniated disk, I suffer chronic pain instant as soon as I stand...My leg is shrinking, and I have no means of any treatment since we have such wonderful health care, what am I doing to myself, is more damage happening to me?
